About Dr Liz

I am a medical doctor and experienced SSP provider, specialising in 1:1 online support for those experiencing the effects of complex trauma and chronic illness.

I also have a lived experience of the impact that complex trauma can have on physical and mental health. This has led to my fascination about the mechanisms underlying the impact that trauma and illness can have on the brain and body. I continue to explore different ways to effectively facilitate healing.

I have developed my Sensitive Approach: Client at the Core through many years of in-depth work with clients, both in person and online, locally and around the world. I now share this effective relational approach to clinical work with fellow SSP providers through online 1:1 mentoring sessions, recorded modules, and workshops.

Support from Dr Stephen Porges

Based on my clinical experience with SSP, in 2019, Dr Porges gave me the honour of inviting me to create a new set of SSP delivery guidelines for working with adults with complex trauma. I then continued to support the SSP provider community with regular Q&As and as an inaugural member of the Clinical Advisory Team for Unyte-iLs. I have had the pleasure and privilege of Dr Porges’ ongoing support as I continue to develop safe and effective ways to deliver SSP for clients with complex trauma and chronic illness.

In the summer of 2022, I began developing my Sensitive Approach: Client at the Core™ which draws on my extensive work with clients, insights from my medical background, fascination in neuroscience and my personal trauma therapy process. I now offer Sensitive Approach online training, mentoring and workshops for fellow SSP providers internationallyIn July 2024 Dr Porges wrote: ‘I continue to be a big supporter of your work, Liz, and I am sure your Sensitive Approach will continue to expand its influence and impact.’

Testimonial from Dr Porges

Liz Charles is a physician in the UK who is using the Safe and Sound Protocol with adults with a variety of clinical histories. She is a generous and compassionate person and is especially committed to using SSP with adults who have a trauma history. She has a deep understanding of trauma that provides her with the insights to support the courage of her clients and has been very successful in adapting the SSP to give good outcomes with trauma survivors.

SSP with Dr Liz

Specialising in delivery of SSP online to adults experiencing the effects of complex trauma and chronic illness, I have a particular interest in Parkinson’s disease and Long COVID.
The effects of complex trauma and chronic illness often co-exist, and I am careful to titrate the SSP listening to suit you and your current situation. Titration depends on many factors which we will explore together in close collaboration during our regular sessions. I use my medical background, knowledge of neuroscience, and personal experience of the effects of trauma to sensitively support each person through SSP as appropriate to their individual situation and needs.

Long COVID

Liz helped me gain a deep understanding of my nervous system, its various states, and the crucial role my body plays in shaping my reality. One of the most powerful aspects of our work together was how, over time, I began to rediscover my true authentic self and acknowledge past traumas that I had long avoided. The Safe and Sound Protocol created enough stability in my body to finally address things that had been buried and to release me from past burdens. On this journey of healing, I have moved from being totally bedbound to reclaiming beautiful glimmers of life again—a return of fun, relationships, independence, and study. I look forward to continuing this transformative work with Liz and am excited for the future that lies ahead.

Misophonia

“Doing SSP with Liz was a really wonderful experience. Over the course of our sessions together I noticed a sense of clarity emerging, and an awareness of what nervous system state I was in, along with a significant reduction in my lifelong issues around sound sensitivity. Liz’s unique combination of SSP coupled with numerous regulation exercises seems to have anchored the impact of SSP – but has also helped me incorporate nervous system regulation into my everyday life in a straightforward and pleasant way. Liz is compassionate, fun and all her sessions were absolutely tailor-made to me and my situation. I can’t recommend her highly enough and in fact have recommended her to a few people!”

Parkinson’s Disease

“I have been working with Dr. Liz now for 6 months and my initial reason was to deal with Parkinsons Disease. The SSP has been really effective. My rigidity has improved so much that I can roll in bed, my arm moves freely and I dont shuffle when I walk anymore. I swallow normally and just move much better. Even more importantly Dr Liz has helped me understand how my childhood has shaped my nervous system and how that had been still impacting me all these years later. I feel like a weight has lifted off my shoulders (literally and figuratively). She is such a special person- so kind and understanding.”

Complex trauma

“I had SSP remotely. I did not quite know what to expect from our first session but Dr Liz was clear and supportive and guided me effortlessly through the process. She had a fantastic knack of making me feel listened to and supported. She was able to balance being very present but also letting me ‘just be’ when listening to the music so I was able to separate myself from any demands. Dr Liz could not have been more understanding and supportive in helping me build SSP into my routine at a time that was helpful to me.”

Sharing my Clinical Model

Sensitive Approach: Client at the Core™

Extensive work with clients, insights from my medical background, fascination in neuroscience and my personal trauma therapy process led to development of Sensitive Approach: Client at the Core™ – an integral part of my individual client work. I provide a kind and gentle ‘user-friendly’ experience by supporting the client through careful titration of SSP to suit their system and circumstances.

Since 2019, I have supported the SSP provider community with extensive contributions to clinical guidelines and best practices for Unyte-iLs, including regular Q&As and as an inaugural member of the Clinical Advisory Team.

I now have the privilege and pleasure to share Sensitive Approach: Client at the Core™ internationally with fellow SSP providers through my online training, mentoring and workshops. It’s a joy to share this work and the potential capacity for deep healing and transformation which I have the privilege to regularly witness in my clients as well as personally experience.
